In the last 15 years, we’ve had some true national treasures when it comes to children’s movies.
Finding Nemo, Up, Inside Out, Frozen—need I say more?
But even with all the fantastic kids’ movies we have today, there’s something about classic movies from the ‘80s that just can’t be matched. Here are just a few movies from the ‘80s that every kids today should see!
  1. The Goonies (1985).

    Warner Bros. Two brothers go on a quest with their friends to find hidden treasure to save their parents from losing their home. Mixed in with adventure and comedy is a real story about friendship and growing up. The Goonies is a real treat for the whole family!
  2. The Land Before Time (1988).

    Universal Pictures Your kids have probably seen one of the more updated sequels—there’s about 5 million of them—but nothing compares to the original.
  3. Stand by Me (1986).

    Columbia Pictures Most coming-of-age stories today are compared to Stand by Me—one of the incomparable originals. As a story about love, loss, and friendship, this classic film is heartwarming at times but gut-wrenching in some scenes. Because it’s rated R, this is probably a movie to watch with your older kids.
  4. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982).

    Universal Pictures As one of the top movies of all time, E.T. is an absolute must-see for people of all ages. If your kids haven’t seen it already, this is perfect for a family movie night! WhileE.T. may seem a little frightening to small children, it’s a true masterpiece that every child should see at some point.

  6. The NeverEnding Story (1984).

  7. The Little Mermaid (1989).

    Disney By now, pretty much every kid has already seen The Little Mermaid, but it’s probably one of the most important movies on this list. In 1989, Ariel became the first Disney Princess in 30 years, since Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, which came out in 1989. Ariel also marked the first “rebellious” Disney Princess, showing a level of independence and “girl power” that hadn’t been seen in Disney movies before.
  8. The Princess Bride (1987).

    20th Century Fox This is a seriously fun movie that everybody will enjoy. Love, adventure, evil princes, magic—The Princess Bridereally has it all! It’s also one of the only movies that you can say is way better than the book.
  9. The Fox and the Hound (1981).

    Disney Another story about love and friendship that will completely pull at your heartstrings. While The Fox and the Hound is definitely a Disney movie that every child should see at least once, you’re probably going to want to grab a box of tissues for this tear-jerker.
  10. Beetlejuice (1988).

    Warner Bros. If your kids haven’t already watched this classic Tim Burton film, it’s one that would be fantastic to watch around Halloween. Beetlejuice is a movie that’s super fun for kids and adults!
