There is so much room for contamination in today’s foods not only because of the mass volume that the food is commonly produced in, but also due to the nature of the manufacturing process of having the food touch so many surfaces that are rarely cleaned. That is why you always need to be vigilant and keep an eye out for foods that are being recalled are deemed unsafe for consumption in order to protect yourself against infection. General Mills has issues a statement recalling their Nature Valley bars due to contamination concerns, so make sure you have none of the following products. The first item that is being recalled is the Nature Valley Protein Chewy Bar with Honey, Peanut & Almond with Pumpkin Seeds.  There are five bars in this package, with a UPC code of 000-16000-47196. These bars are also delicious, so it’s a shame that they are recalling them because they also will pack a punch by giving you 10 grams of protein on the inside! The second one that they are recalling are the Nature Valley Protein Chewy Bar, Peanut, Almond & Dark Chocolate.  Again, there are five bars in this package with a UPC code of 000-16000-45724. The next bar that they are recalling is the Nature Valley Simple Nut Bar with Almond, Cashew & Sea Salt.  This package comes in a four count, and a twenty five count.  The 4 count has a UPC code of 000-16000-46474 and the 25 count has a UPC code of 000-16000-41301. The last box of bars to look out for are the Nature Valley Simple Nut Bar – Roasted Peanut & Honey, which come in a four count and a sixteen count.  The four count has a UPC code of 000-16000-46475 and the 16 count has a UPC of 000-16000-41308. The bars are all being ordered to be thrown away, which is too bad due to how pricey these bars can be, especially if you bought one of the larger packs.  If you are thinking of risking it, do not even think about it! The reason why they are recalling the bars is due to a contamination that goes by the name of Listeria. You may notice that all of these bars have one ingredient in common which are the sunflower seeds in them.  The company that supplies the sun flower seeds to General Mills informed them recently that they had potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes in their seeds, so General Mills decided to take no risks and let people know right away. If you get listeria, make sure to make your way to a medical professional to get the infection treated as soon as possible to that it does not spread to other parts of your body. Some common symptoms include muscle aches, diarrhea, fever, and a weakened immune system. What do you think of this outbreak?  Did General Mills do the right thing by coming out with a statement about the products or should one of the companies be fined for unsanitary conditions?  Let us know in the comments below, and be sure not to eat those bars!
